The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts was first opened in 1996 to create a new approach to performing arts training. It is considered an institute of excellence for higher education in the areas of performing arts. The institute provides learning for the main skills necessary for putting on a show. They provide a range of degree courses across disciplines such as theatre, community drama, acting, creative technologies, performance, management of music, dance, entertainment, sound technology, and more. In addition to degree-level courses, they have a range of full-time one-year foundation-level certificate programs.

Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts has a number of bursaries and scholarships. For instance, they offer £560 to all degree students from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and England who show they are in receipt of the full maintenance loan allowance. They also offer an annual £1,000 Care Leaver bursary to UK students below the age of 25 who have been in care before their 16th birthday for six months or longer.
