The University of Highlands and Islands is a highly-ranked public institution for education and research situated in Scotland. The university was established in 1993 and is comprised of 13 academic partners in the Islands and Highlands. They gained official degree-granting powers in 2005 and university status in 2011 along with their current name. They provide teaching across 13 different sites in addition to research centers at Fort William, Shetland, Thurso, Argyll, Elgin, Inverness, Dornoch, and Orkney.  The university also runs more than 70 local learning centers with the goal of providing education to as many people as possible.
