University of Wales
About
The University of Wales was founded in Cardiff, Wales by the Royal Charter in 1893, making it the oldest and the first university of Wales and the second biggest UK university. In the beginning, it had three constituent colleges which were University College North Wales, University College South Wales and University College Wales, and Monmouthshire. These are now known as the University of Bangor, the University of Cardiff, and the University of Aberystwyth. Numerous other colleges were incorporated over the years including Swansea University and St. David’s College, part of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. It was the only university in Wales until 1992 when the University of Glamorgan was set up. It was a federal university, so its makeup was very similar to the University of London, with several member organisations. They changed from this structure to a confederal one in 2007 and most of the constituent colleges became independent universities. They officially gained the name the University of Wales in 1992. The University of Wales provides a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
