About 

York St John University is an open university which was established in 1841. It was in 2006 that it gained university status. Prior to this, it was known as the Diocesan College in York and then changed its name a number of times until 2006. The university is considered to be one of the best higher education institutions. They have also been named in the top 10 universities in the country for teaching quality by the Sunday Times.  

Its campus sits on 11 acres of land and has a range of accommodation for students. There are also a number of restaurants and cafes in close proximity as well as stores. They offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Currently, they teach around 5,940 students. Their courses span topics such as psychology, linguistics, media production, business, history, drama, theatre, music production, and more. In 2026, they will celebrate their 185th anniversary and 20 years of full university status.  

Postgraduate Programs They Run 

York St John University offers several postgraduate programs covering topics such as technology, design, science, health, theatre, music, computer science, literature, psychology, and more. Some of the award classifications their courses provide include Master of Art (MA), Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert), Master of Law (LLM), and more. Some of their postgraduate programs also allow for online or distance learning.  

Admissions Process 

Undergraduate applicants should make their applications via the UCAS. Simply visit the UCAS website and find your chosen course. Then, press apply and begin filling out your application. When filling it in be sure to include the correct institution and course codes. Once submitted, the admissions team will review it and contact you with their decision. International students looking to pursue undergraduate programs can apply in the same way.  

Postgraduate applications should be made directly to the University. You will find the link to apply on the relevant course page on the York St John University website. In order to successfully complete the form, you will need a few things. These include: 

  • Your current qualifications 
  • Your work history and current employment 
  • A personal statement 
  • References 
  • A portfolio (depending on the course you are applying for) 

After you have submitted your application, the admissions team will review it and let you know via email if they are offering you a place on your chosen course.  

Accommodation 

York St John University guarantees accommodation for all EU, UK, and international first-year students so long as they meet the application deadlines. Their accommodation sites are all based in the heart of York, 1 mile or less away from the campus. Prices range from £105 per week and up with a range of different types of properties available. Most rooms will have a bed, wardrobe, shelves, and a study area that includes a chair and a desk. Some have a bathroom en-suite while others have shared bathrooms. Kitchens and living areas are shared. Laundry facilities are available on-site and you will have access to Wi-Fi and bike storage. Some of the properties are disability-friendly also. York St John University has a number of scholarships available for home students and international students studying undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
